What this check does
SiteCurl uses the internal links it finds during the scan to estimate how many clicks it takes to reach each page from the homepage. Pages that sit too deep in the structure are flagged because they are harder to discover and revisit.
The crawl depth number represents the shortest path from the homepage to the page, measured in link clicks. A page at depth 1 is linked directly from the homepage. A page at depth 4 requires clicking through three intermediate pages before reaching it.

How this shows up in the real world
Site structure affects how search engines allocate crawl resources. Crawlers start at the homepage and follow links outward. Pages close to the homepage get crawled first and most often. Pages buried deep in the structure may be crawled less frequently, which means changes to those pages take longer to appear in search results.
Crawl depth is also a proxy for internal authority. In most link-based ranking models, pages closer to the homepage receive more internal link equity. A page four clicks deep inherits less authority than a page one click from the homepage, even if both pages have the same external links.
Deep pages are not always a problem. A blog archive from 2019 sitting at depth 5 may be fine if it is not targeting competitive queries. But a pricing page, a key service page, or a high-converting landing page should never be buried. The fix is to move important pages closer to the surface, not to flatten every page to depth 1.

Promoting it to the main navigation or linking directly from the homepage cuts the depth in half.
How to fix it
Step 1: Identify the pages that matter most. Sort your deep pages by business value: revenue pages, lead generation pages, and high-traffic content should be prioritized. Not every deep page needs to be moved up.
Step 2: Add contextual links from higher-level pages. A link from a relevant parent page or hub page is more valuable than a footer link. Place these links within the body content where they make sense for the reader.
Step 3: Rework hub pages and category indexes. If a section of your site is consistently deep, the section's hub page may need more links to child pages. A well-structured hub page that links to 20 or 30 child pages brings the entire section one level closer.
Step 4: Update navigation if a whole section is buried. Sometimes the fix is structural: add a top-level navigation link to an important section that was previously only reachable through a submenu or footer link.
Common mistakes when fixing this
Relying only on XML sitemaps. Sitemaps help discovery, but internal links still carry authority signals that sitemaps do not. A page found only through the sitemap is discovered but not prioritized.
Adding links only in the footer. Footer links are site-wide, which dilutes their value. Contextual links from related pages send stronger signals because they appear in relevant content.
Keeping high-value pages hidden behind filters or tool flows. If a page matters for search traffic, it needs a direct link path from the homepage. Interactive tools and filter-driven navigation are great for users but invisible to most crawlers.
Flattening everything to depth 1. Linking every page from the homepage creates a shallow but chaotic structure. The goal is to bring important pages closer, not to eliminate hierarchy entirely.
